Advent 2018 – Day 11: Everlasting Dominion

By Kasey Cooper

Today’s Passage: Daniel 7:13-14

And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed. — Daniel 7:14

How often do we contemplate the majesty of God? Daniel 7 gives us amazing imagery of the moment God the Father granted eternal dominion to Jesus. Think about what it would be like to be Daniel and to witness that scene, even if it was only in a prophetic dream. The same God comes to earth from His place of eternal glory as the Son of Man who takes on the form of a humble baby born in Bethlehem.

We may be tempted to solely view the Christ-child as a helpless baby in a manger, but this perspective is incredibly dangerous to our walk with Christ. It is so important that we never forget to behold the majesty of the God who came in the form of that baby. In the book of Daniel, God the Father is referred to as “Ancient of Days,” and Jesus is referred to as the “Son of Man” (Daniel 7:13). In chapter 7, Daniel illustrates the Ancient of Days as sitting on a throne of flames as fire flows out from Him and more than tens of thousands of attendants worshipping at His feet. This is the kind of imagery we are looking at here.

The Son of Man descends on the clouds and approaches the Ancient of Days and is presented with dominion over the nations. We learn that Christ’s everlasting reign exists for the purpose that “all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him” (verse 14). Jesus’s dominion exists so that we, as saints in His Kingdom, may serve Him, ultimately giving God the glory due His name.

We place our hope in the fact that Christ’s kingdom will never pass away and that one day we will be in the presence of the Ancient of Days. And the same God who sits on a throne of flames loves and cherishes His children more than we could ever imagine, which makes His powerful love for us that much more precious and trustworthy.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we praise You and thank You that You are a God that is worthy of praise; help us to glorify You in all that we do. In Jesus’s name, amen.
